A study that appeared in the journal called Clinical Chiropractic in 2011 proved that this ‘secret weapon’ was even more effective than ice. The researchers tested 51 adults who had neck pain on both sides of their neck by using ice on one side of the neck and Biofreeze on the other side. None of the patients had received any cortisone injections in their neck for the past year nor had they had any surgical intervention.
The patients were asked to rate their pain on each side of the neck after treatment. The next day they were asked whether they preferred ice or Biofreeze and asked to rate their answer according to a five-point scale. On this pain scale, 1 was very unlikely/uncomfortable neck pain and 5 was Very Likely/Comfortable. They were also asked which modality had a longer lasting effect. Their neck pain level scores for Biofreeze was 3.65 and 5.0 for ice.
Both treatments worked but the Biofreeze relieved their neck pain twice as much. The patients preferred the Biofreeze more often, rated it as more comfortable and preferred it more often. It also lasted longer 9 out of 10 times.
